Flexible Learning Surface

This innovative learning surface was inspired by and ultimately given to a fourth grade class. In order to meet the needs of the children and address the inadequacies of their current desks, a folding design was chosen for a more versatile learning environment. Taking up no more space than a traditional school desk, the three forms allow the child more control. In its traditional desk configuration, the child is seated with a workspace in front for productive learning. In its lounge form, a child can be more relaxed and sit in a reclined position which is perfect for reading a book. Finally, in its standing desk configuration a child can work off some extra energy while still being productive. The versatility allows the desk to accommodate the differing activities of the day and the different needs of different children.

Research and Brainstorming

To begin this project, time was spent with a fourth grade class to understand their needs in a learning environment. First, the class was observing to see how they used their work spaces throughout a normal day. After the initial observations were made, I lead a brainstorm with a portion of the class to imagine what their ideal desk would look like. This was a great exercise to harness the creativity of the children while simultaneously learning what was most important from their perspective.

Make it stand out.

Taking away what was most important to the children as well as what was observed the first round of sketching was begun. The main goals were to make a learning surface that was flexible and configurable. This would allow the desk to meet the different needs throughout the day and gave the children some control over their workspace while engaging their imaginations.

Rough Rapid Prototypes

By using simple materials, like foam and tape, many full size concepts could be mocked up and tested in rapid succession. Working in the way, quickly shows flaws in concepts as well as sparks new ideas.

Iteration Two: Sketching

After constructing several rapid prototypes, another round of sketching was done to refine the concept. It was decided to add a standing desk configuration and reduce the design to a single desk which allows for more flexibility in their arrangement in the classroom.

Final Design and Build

The final design was created in 3d computer models that were then used to create the build plans for the working prototype. A full scale working prototype was created for user testing.

Prototype Usability Testing

After the completion of the prototype, the fourth grade class was invited to come test the desks that were built for them. Observing the classes use of the desk, gave key insights into changes which would greatly improve the usability and ergonomics. These changes were made before the prototypes were given to the children for their use in the classroom.
